The GBR Series offers a choice of configuration options
for pay-as-you-grow flexibility in implementing a SAN. The GBR Series uses
modular GBIC's (Gigabit Interface Converters) for port-to-port selection
of media, whether your network calls for optics or copper. It also offers
the flexibility to change the cabling plant without replacing the entire
unit.
GBR Series hubs are available in 6-port and 12-port manageable
versions, The GBR-06-, 6-port hub provides an economical starting point
for satisfying the storage connectivity requirements typical of mid-range
departmental servers. The GBR-12, 12-port hub is geared more toward
fulfilling the storage capacity and connectivity requirements typical of
the high-end enterprise server. In either case, the two versions offer
identical enterprise functionality and are completely interoperable and
cascadeable.
Managed Network
Connectivity
Just as the concept of network
management has become integral to today's LAN and WAN environments, the
GBR Series brings network management into thSAN environment via the Ventana
Management architcture. This architecture links distributed management
agents, which collect information from each hub, with an extensieve array
of graphical displays through the Ventana management applications. The
result is the industry's most comprehensive management system for network
data storage environments. Future Ventana management enhancements will
extend manageability beyond the hub and directly to each port-attached
storage device.
Data Reliability
The Reflex port bypass feature ensures data reliability
and network continuity even if a port fails or becomes disconnected.
Functionally, Reflex detects a port failure or disconnection and
automatically bypasses the failed port. Reflex then automatically
reconfigures the loop to ensure uninterrupted network integrity between all
operating devices. Newly enables ports are also automatically detected and
registered onto the operating loop without causing disruption to
established data paths.
The validity of the Reflex automatic reconfiguration
function is assured through a complete suite of intelligent data detection
tests implemented within the hub. The data tests detect various error
conditions including validity of 8-bit to 10-bit (8b/10b) encoding,
presence of oscillation and existence of an open cable.

Enhanced Network
Scalability
The GBR Series is a product line of fully managed hubs
which use Fibre-Channel as the transport technology for creating a SAN
environment. The combination of arbitrated loop technology with the GBR's
manageability results in an infrastructure with far greater scalability
than current storage configurations. Existing bus oriented SCSI
environments have significant limitations in terms of number of devices
supported, bus distance restrictions, available bandwidth and expandability
of the wiring plant.
In contrast, GBR Series hubs can be cascaded, using any
of the hub ports, allowing modular growth of the network. The key to being
able to reliably deploy multiple cascaded GBR hubs lies in the PerfectPort
feature. PerfectPort is a per-port signal regeneration and re-timing
feature which ensures the data signal strength and integrity out of and
into each GBR port. In this way, even when GBR hubs are cascaded using
maximum Fibre-Channel copper or optical cabling lengths, data signal
characteristics are maintained.
